Sometimes we are powerless because of our stations in life. We may be in a situation where other people have power over us. We may feel that we are trapped by the demands of others and that there’s no way out. So we turn to alcohol, which numbs us of all feelings. An escape, at times it seems we have spent most of our lives not wanting to be here. I have heard so many Alcoholics say I want to die, sort of a theme song for us Alkies.
A.A. provides a way out of our bondage without the need to hide or escape. Most walk into A.A. broken and lost.
Step one suggest we admit we are powerless over alcohol and that our lives our unmanageable. For this alcoholic, every time I picked up a drink, unknown to myself I was already admitting my powerlessness over the bottle. Life was nothing but unmanageable and I never had control over the amount I would have or what would happen.
A.A. did for me what I could not do for myself, it gave me a choice not to pick up that drink, by simply using the tools set forth by the Founders of the program.
I am free today, also free to move away from the program, I was once told,” Those who forget their past are doomed to relive it”. Well I can assure you, at least for this alcoholic those words were very true.
